Judgement Day(s)!

February 10, 2011
by brokeninkusca

We asked for submissions, and you gave us an absolutely overwhelming response! We’ve gone from 89 total submissions last year to 200+ this year! In fact, last Saturday, we all gathered as a staff to sort through them all, and there was just so much that one day was simply not enough to get to it all! Thus, once again, this Saturday, it’s JUDGEMENT DAY! We’re looking very forward to experiencing the rest of your wonderful work, dear submitters, and good luck to each and every one of you in the selection process. Thanks again for giving us the privilege of experiencing your work!

Dear friends, it is now submission crunch time! If you’ve even remotely considered submitting your work to Broken Ink, NOW is the time to do so! When that final deadline (Feb 4th) passes, so does the opportunity! Don’t let it pass you by! Brush it up, and follow the instructions here to submit it! We look forward to seeing your work!

Come Celebrate Writing with Broken Ink!

October 16, 2010
by brokeninkusca

National Day on Writing is on October 20th and Broken Ink will be celebrating outside the H&SS building! We’ll have a number of writing activities for students to get their creative juices flowing, as well as games and a haiku contest. Come by from 11-3 to contribute your thoughts to the “What writing means to me” box, add to the two serial stories that will be written as a group effort throughout the day, play “Stump the Poet”, and submit your entry to the Halloween Haiku Contest. Submissions are open now at the Broken Ink Facebook page.

The rules for the Halloween Haiku Contest are pretty simple: make a haiku about Halloween, post it to our Facebook wall or turn it in on the National Day on Writing (October 20th), which is also the deadline for the contest. We will then judge the haiku and broadcast our final decisions via Facebook, Student News, and the Stall Wall. The top 3 haikus will also be published in the 2011 issue of Broken Ink.

If you’ve forgotten what a haiku is, fret not! It is a three-lined poem with the syllable counts of 5-7-5 in each line. Here is an example:

A black cat meows ( a – black – cat – me – ows) [5]

whilst the moon beckons liars (whilst – the – moon – beck – ons – li – ars) [7]

to shed their shackles. (to – shed – their – shack – les) [5]

Only USCA students can participate. No limit to the entries but only one from each person can win. Thanks for taking your time to read this note! A haiku entry is a couple clicks away! Also, come see us from 11-3 in front of the H&SS on October 20th! We’d love to see you!

The stories and poems we write at the National Day on Writing will all be featured at the National Gallery of Writing, which can be found here:
